DUNE is a modular toolbox for solving partial differential equations with
grid-based methods.
Its core consists of a powerful, abstract grid interface, a template library
for the sulution of linear systems, and an interface for Finite Element bases.
A DUNE discretization module based on abstract interfaces for function spaces
and operators allowing the implementation of continuous and discontinuous
Finite Element sand Finite Volume methods.
ALUGrid is an
adaptive,
loadbalancing, and
unstructured implementation of the DUNE grid interface in two
or three space dimensions supporting either simplex or cube elements.
SPGrid is a performant implementation of the DUNE grid interface
for structured, parallel grids.

The interactive volcano simulation DUNE-Ash is a winning module of the open-source competition
Mathematics of Planet Earch 2013.
It is based on DUNE-FEM and DUNE-SPGrid.
