Γ-convergence for energy-driven lattice systems
This talk is meant as an introductory talk to discrete-to-continuum variational analysis, that is, the asymptotic analysis via Γ-convergence of energy-driven discrete systems when the lattice spacing vanishes. After a brief introduction to the concept of Γ-convergence and its main properties, we will give some guiding examples also highlighting the relation between Γ-convergence and relaxation. Towards the end of the talk I would like to present some of my work in this context, which is concerned with the variational analysis of discrete energies that in the Γ-limit give rise to so-called free-discontinuity functionals.

Relaxed energy potentials based on perturbations of divergence-free fields
Quasiconvexification is not only a mathematical tool to prove the existence of minimisers. It is moreover a sophisticated method for the modelling of complex material behaviour as occurring in, e.g., shape memory alloys. The aim of this presentation is to discuss the basics of this concept from an engineer's perspective, to elaborate different energy relaxation concepts as approximations to quasiconvexification, and to show specific applications in the context of phase transformation models.
